The Perfect Cookie Experience: A Vintage Cookie Recipe and J. Devlin Glass Tray

Vintage style glass tray by J. Devlin makes a beautiful serving tray.

Everyone loves chocolate chip cookies, right? If you don’t, you must be from another planet! Just kidding! But seriously, how do some cooks get chocolate chip cookies to turn out so good? Every time we make them they are too flat or too crispy. We’ve been in search of the perfect chocolate chip cookie…you know the kind…sweet gooey goodness straight from grandma’s oven.

We wondered if perhaps the best-tasting cookies are not the “new and improved” variations but instead the old “tried and true” recipes. That’s right—a vintage chocolate chip cookie recipe. So we dug out grandma’s tattered Better Homes and Gardens 1968 Cook Book and mixed up her favorite cookie recipe—it had melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chunks! Really—there’s nothing like an old-fashioned cookie recipe! Try out the vintage cookie recipe below and tell us what you think.

Hold up! There’s one more important detail that shouldn’t be overlooked—the cookie eating experience. Recreate an old-fashioned feel-good setting by serving your cookies on J. Devlin’s mirrored bottom glass tray (Tra 106-1). Its vintage textured slanted glass sides with mirrored bottom are reminiscent of days gone by. Line it with pretty vintage style paper and don’t forget the milk!

Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 well-beaten egg
  • 1½ cups flour*
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon soda
  • 1 7- or 8-ounce package semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • ½ cup chopped California walnut meats (optional)

Thoroughly cream shortening, vanilla, and sugars; add egg; beat thoroughly. Add sifted dry ingredients. Stir in chocolate and nut meats. Drop from teaspoon onto greased cookie sheet. Bake in moderately hot oven (375 degrees) about 12 minutes. Makes 5 dozen cookies. Use packaged chocolate pieces or bar, chopped.

*Note: We added a little bit more flour for a fluffier cookie!

If this recipe doesn’t float your boat, read The Science Behind Baking the Most Delicious Cookie Ever by Anne Miller on the OZY website. It may not be grandma’s recipe, but it’s serious cookie science.
