In real stained glass the color is created by adding metal compounds or oxides while it is still in a molten state for example cobalt for blue, sulfur and cadmium for yellow, iron oxides for greens and browns. Real stained glass will never fade.

Because of its relationship with light stained glass changes throughout the day and with the seasons. Sometimes subtly sometimes dramatically.

There are endless colors and textures. Stained glass can be opaque or translucent and a dozen stages in between. It can be smooth, rippled, fluted, reeded or embossed with pattern.

One of our favorite glasses known as English Muffle was originally produced in England during the Victorian era, today is made in the USA. It’s subtle texture and muted translucent colors made it a highly desired then and ideal now for J Devlin keepsake boxes, photo frames and home décor items.

There are two basic methods used to create stained glass art. The first being channeled lead predominately used for stained glass windows. The second, is the copper foil method developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany in the late 1800’s. Ideal for dimensional art we use the Tiffany style for our jewelry boxes, picture frames, night lights, ornaments and lamps.

Creating a piece of art in this process starts with cutting and shaping each piece of glass to fit the design. The edges of the glass pieces are then wrapped with copper foil and arranged according to the pattern. A solder is melted over the foil in a nice rounded line to hold the pieces together. A skill that takes some time to perfect.
